While listening to a podcast recently, I was struck by a simple yet profound question: "What brings you joy? What gets you excited to get up and make a difference?" To my surprise, I had the answer instantly. Advocacy. And the legislative process. Yes—really.
A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of participating in my fourth lobby day, joining forces with the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance and the United States Swim School Association on Capitol Hill. It was, without a doubt, our most significant and impactful Hill Day yet. We met with Senators, Representatives, and their staff to share our message of prevention. We advocated for the SWIM Act, called for increased support in drowning data collection, and emphasized the urgency of reinstating a position at the CDC to properly track and analyze drowning incidents nationwide. And let me tell you—these conversations mattered. You could feel it in the energy in the room, in the thoughtful responses, and in the momentum that seemed to build with every meeting. I left D.C. feeling not only inspired but also invigorated.
With a background in Sociology and Criminal Justice, I never would've predicted this would be my path. However, in hindsight, it all falls into place. Advocacy gives me a platform to use that foundation in a meaningful way—to amplify the need for protection, prevention, and public awareness. It's about giving voice to those who can't speak up for themselves. It's about fighting for change before tragedy strikes.
To the 50+ water safety professionals who stood shoulder to shoulder in D.C.—thank you. Your passion is palpable. And to Rowdy Gaines and Lisa Zarda, your leadership lights the way. To British Swim School and all our dedicated owners: thank you for living out this mission every single day. We are not just swim instructors or safety advocates. We are water survival activists.
And when I think about what brings me joy, it's this: This purpose. This mission. This opportunity to save lives. I'm filled with gratitude, motivated by progress, and ready to keep going. Because advocacy isn't just a moment—it's a movement. And I couldn't be prouder to be part of it.
