My First Year as a Swim School Business Owner

By Wendy Gibson | Founder, Wendy’s Waves Swim School

Have you ever stood at the edge of the pool, heart racing, ready to take a leap? That’s exactly what it felt like to go from a full-time educator to a part-time professional—and then dive headfirst into launching my own swim instruction business. If you’re dreaming about taking the plunge into entrepreneurship, let me tell you: the waters may be uncharted, but they’re absolutely worth exploring.

Diving into Entrepreneurship

Starting Wendy’s Waves Swim School wasn’t an overnight splash—it was more like a carefully timed stroke. For years, I balanced teaching public school full-time with summers spent guiding little swimmers through backstrokes and butterfly kicks. After countless families asked, “When will you offer winter lessons?” and “Can we swim with you year-round?”—I finally answered the call.

With my heart pounding like I was about to swim a relay final, I reduced my classroom hours and turned a long-standing side passion into my main hustle.

The Leap of Faith

This wasn’t a whimsical jump into the deep end. It was a well-calculated stroke, guided by years of planning, encouragement from loyal swim families, and a fresh wave of opportunity after completing an advanced education degree. The leap came with a life vest full of support and a waterproof business plan, but also with some heavy questions:

  • Will I make enough to stay afloat?
  • What happens when the weather turns cold or kids catch colds?
  • Will they actually show up?

That uncertainty clung to me like cold water at dawn. But it was that same uncertainty that made every small win—a new client, a returning swimmer, a kind review—feel like a gold medal finish.

A Real-Life Balancing Act

Imagine doing a synchronized swimming routine while juggling flaming pool noodles. That’s what it felt like to teach part-time in public schools while building a business from scratch. My days flip-flopped between lesson planning, toddler swim songs, social media posts, invoice spreadsheets, and growth strategies.

But each splash of chaos was matched with a ripple of joy. I was creating something of my own—something that reflected my passion, personality, and purpose.

Learning to Float (Financially)

The entrepreneur’s life isn’t all smooth sailing, especially in year one. Financial uncertainty was real. I had to educate myself—fast. From budgeting to investing, I consumed books, blogs, podcasts, and financial tools like they were poolside snacks.

And you know what? I started floating. I saved during busy months, got smarter with spending, and turned client referrals into steady momentum. The best marketing? Word of mouth. Happy swimmers (and their parents!) became my cheerleaders.

Making Waves with Infant and Toddler Aquatics

One of my most unexpected joys? Splashing around with tiny tots! I launched a new program focused on infant and toddler aquatics, and it’s been a game-changer. These little swimmers get more than adorable pool pics—they develop motor skills, coordination, and confidence in a safe, fun, and playful way. Plus, introducing them early helps reduce water anxiety and lays the foundation for lifelong water safety.

Building More than a Business—Building Community

Teaching people to swim is about more than just strokes and kicks. It’s about courage, connection, and growth. Whether it’s a timid toddler or a nervous adult, I’ve watched so many individuals push past their fear and emerge stronger—physically and emotionally.

Swimming is a metaphor for life, after all. It’s about staying afloat, finding your rhythm, and not panicking when your head goes underwater.

Reflections from the Shallow and the Deep

My first year running Wendy’s Waves Swim School was filled with splashes of doubt, waves of joy, and an ocean of learning. I still have a long way to go, but every client, every lesson, every email, and every thank-you hug is proof that I’m swimming in the right direction.

Patience, like in swimming, is key. Growth—whether in the pool or in business—is personal, progressive, and deeply rewarding.

Our Mission at Wendy’s Waves

At Wendy’s Waves Swim School, our mission is simple yet powerful: Make swimming safe, fun, and accessible for all. We’re creating more than swimmers—we’re nurturing confidence, building resilience, and empowering individuals, one kickboard at a time.
